Madrid

Madrid, the capital of Spain, is located in the geographical center of the Iberian Peninsula, and at a height of 2,200 feet above sea level, is the highest capital in Europe. The surrounding province extends for over 8,000 square kilometers and has approximately 4 million people. The meteorologists state that Madrid enjoys more cloudless days than almost any other city on the continent. On very clear days, one can see the Guadarrama Mountains, which are snow-covered in winter from the city.

In the 10th century, Madrid was still an unimportant village called Magerit. Although it gradually expanded over the centuries, it was not until Philip II made it his capital that it's real importance as a city began. During the War of the Spanish Succession, Madrid changed hands many times. Later, in opposition to Napoleon, an uprising broke out which led to the War of Independence. There followed a period of slow decline leading to the Civil War in 1936 which ended in 1939 when the Nationalists entered Madrid and Franco made it his capital. It was after the end of World War II that the booming days of reconstruction and industrial growth began.

Today, as an industrial center, Madrid houses the great carpet and tapestry factories founded in 1721 by Philip V. Gold and silver jewelry are manufactured here, and Madrid's style of furniture has become world famous. As the capital of the country, Madrid is not only the headquarters for the government, but also for the stock exchange and most major banks.

Madrid boasts one of the great museums of the world, The Prado, and after strolling along the city's wide avenues, and shopping in the elegant shops, one can still find the charm of the "old" city. The beautiful Plaza Mayor is the center of Old Madrid, and is surrounded by cafes and restaurants.
