Lanzarote

The most easterly of the Canary Islands, Lanzarote has its own distinctive beauty and atmosphere. The island's fascinating landscape was formed by volcanoes, and its serene beaches and tropical vegetation stand in stark contrast to the fascinating petrified lava streams, craters and lava shaped caves. The efforts to preserve Lazarote's natural heritage have been acknowledged by UNESCO, which has designated the island as a World Biosphere Reserve.

Lanzarote's fame as a holiday destination stems from its unique balance of natural beauty and state-of-the-art tourist facilities. Virtually every watersport can be enjoyed here, from windsurfing to scuba diving, and conditions are also ideal for sailing and fishing. For a combination of fun and adventure, try a camel ride in the Fire Mountains of Timanfaya National Park.

Arrecife, the island's capital, is a charming city, whose port is overlooked by the castles of San Rogue and San Jose. To the south along the coast, in towns such as Tias and Puerto del Carmen, there are some truly lovely beaches and delightfully tranquil spots for picnic and picture-taking.

There are unique cultural centers such as the San Jose Castle, where concerts, plays and exhibitions are held. Fashionable boutiques, Moroccan bazaars and a popular street market provide diverse shopping opportunities. And the nights are alive with pubs, open-air terrace cafes and discotheques.
