Escape to the Sunny, Sophisticated Spectacularly Beautiful Canary Islands

Situated in the Atlantic Ocean off the northwest coast of Africa, and barely two hours south of mainland Spain, the Canary Islands are just six hours flying time from New York. For centuries, these seven sub-tropical islands have been a haven to those seeking escape from the cold, gray days of winter. Today, they are a major vacation destination, whose wonderful climate, warm hospitality and unspoiled beauty have attracted millions of visitors from all over Europe and the rest of the world.

"Islands of Eternal Spring"

Ptolemy, a ruler of ancient Egypt, called the Canary Islands the "Fortunate Islands" because of their perpetually mild, spring-like weather and temperate waters. Even though the Canary Archipelago lies very close to the desert region of Africa, just above the Tropic of Cancer, the prevailing trade winds ensure mild temperatures year-round (the average is in the mid-70s) with no humidity. And the warm current of the Gulf Stream keeps the water temperatures along the island's coasts and beaches generally higher than the temperatures on land.

Seven Strikingly Different "Miniature Continents"

Each of the Canary Islands, a result of volcanic eruptions centuries ago, is like a perfect miniature continent, whose distinctive beauty is a product of an intermingling of European, American, and African flora, with oak and palm trees. The fragrances of hibiscus, jasmine, honeysuckle, cyclamen and orange blossoms waft in the breeze. And most astonishing is the diversity of landscape: sandy beaches; lush tropical vegetation; desert; craggy volcanic rocks and craters; and rocky coves. It is a measure of the island's richly varied landscapes that of Spain's nine National Parks, four have been created within the small Canary Archipelago.

The Canarians...As Hospitable As The Weather

Famous for their hospitality and warmth, the Canarians are very proud of their islands and of their ability to host the millions of vacationers they receive each year. And their pride is reflected in the quality of service, attention and friendliness that is shown to visitors.

A World-Class Vacation Destination

The perpetually pleasant climate, inviting waters and dazzling scenery of the Canary Islands, set the stage for the vacation you've been dreaming about. Fine hotels to satisfy every taste and budget abound on Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and all the other islands. And the recreational opportunities are virtually unlimited. There are beautiful golf courses, and most hotels have tennis courts. You can enjoy your favorite watersports, spend a day sailing or fishing, go horseback riding, or explore the exotic island scenery.

Dining is always a pleasure. Whether you're sampling the zesty delights of Canarian cooking, famous dishes from the Continent or other, more exotic international cuisines. Every major resort has a variety of restaurants where you can enjoy wonderful meals at moderate prices. After dark, the islands are also alive with activity. There are lively pubs, nightclubs featuring international stars, Flamenco dance performances, elegant casinos, and pulsating discos for the young -- and young in spirit.

Getting around the islands is easy. Rental cars for do-it-yourself explorers, and sightseeing tours and excursions are available on all the islands. And, keep in mind that the "freeports" of the Canaries, with their duty-free exemption, are a shopper's paradise.

Celebrate "Carnival" in the Canaries

Carnival is a time of riotous fun and revelry. Bring your mask and costume, and join the Canarians and visitors from around the world in celebrating this colorful, non-stop spectacle that shakes the Canary Islands every February. But even before Carnival, it's a lot of fun to watch the preparations for the social event of the year.
