Sample Itinerary 1
for World Youth Day 2011
Madrid, Spain

Fatima – Santiago – Avila – WYD 2011 Madrid

Day 1 – Departure

Depart USA via your regularly scheduled flight. Dinner and breakfast served on board.

Day 2 – Lisbon

Arrive Lisbon, Portugal. You will be met at the airport and taken on a city tour which will include St. Anthony’s Church. (St. Anthony of Padua was Portuguese). Dinner and overnight.

Day 3 – Santarem – Fatima

Breakfast. Then head for the city of Santarem and the Church of the Holy Miracle to see the Eucharistic Miracle which dates back to the 13th century. Afterwards, continue on to Fatima, the place where the Blessed Mother appeared in 1917 to three shepherd children. Dinner and overnight.

Day 4 – Fatima

Breakfast. Visit the Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima, the tombs of Jacinta, Francesco, and Sister Lucia, the hamlet of Aljustrel, and participate in the Rosary and the Candlelight Procession. Dinner and overnight.

Day 5 – Fatima – Santiago

Breakfast. After mass, depart for the city of Saint James – Santiago de Compostela. Dinner and overnight.

Day 6 – Santiago

Breakfast. Morning visit to the Cathedral, followed by mass and see the famous “botafumeiro” – the enormous incense burner that has been used since medieval times to drown out the smells of the thousands of pilgrims who walked hundreds of miles in honor of Spain’s patron saint. Dinner and overnight.

Day 7 – Santiago – Alba de Tormes – Avila

Breakfast.  Depart for the town where St. Teresa is buried – Alba de Tormes. After a brief visit, continue on to the medieval walled city of Avila to see its Cathedral and the Convent where Santa Teresa, the great mystic, lived. Dinner and overnight.

Day 8 – Avila – Madrid

Breakfast. Then, depart for Madrid and city sightseeing before heading for the site of the overnight vigil. After celebrating Eucharistic Adoration and Benediction with the Pope, you will sleep under the stars in your sleeping bag. Dinner provided by WYD 2011.

Day 9 – Papal Mass – Avila

Breakfast (WYD), then participate in the Papal mass. Afterwards, return to Avila for dinner and overnight.

Day 10 – Departure

Breakfast. Depart for Madrid’s Barajas Airport and your return flight home.

Option A

Day 9 – Papal Mass – Burgos

Breakfast (WYD). After the Papal Mass, depart for Santo Domingo de Silos, the site made famous by the Benedictine Monks and their Gregorian Chants. Afterwards, continue on to the city of Spain’s famous hero – El Cid Campeador. Dinner and overnight.

Day 10 – Burgos – Loyola – Lourdes

Breakfast. Morning tour of Burgos, the cathedral, and el Monasterio de las Huelgas Reales.  Afterwards, head for the town of St. Ignatius, the founder of the Jesuits. After a tour of Loyola, head for the birthplace of St. Bernadette – Lourdes. Dinner and overnight.

Day 11/12 – Lourdes

Breakfast. Our Lady appeared to Bernadette in 1858. See the sanctuary, the Basilica, the baths where hundreds of miracles have taken place, Boly Mill – her birthplace, and the “cachot” – the quarters where she lived with her family. Attend mass, walk the Stations of the Cross, and in the evening say the Rosary during the Candlelight Procession. Dinner and overnight.

Day 13 – Lourdes – Zaragoza

Breakfast. Depart for Zaragoza. Upon arrival, visit the Basilica de Pilar where the Virgin appeared to Saint James and told him to build a church. Dinner and overnight.

Day 14 – Departure

Breakfast. Transfer to Madrid for your return flight home.

 

Option B
